Why Steel?:

Koh is an avid fan of cycling.   He has a huge collection of almost every kind of bike, made of various materials both new and old: carbon, steel, aluminum.  While the top riders of the world seem to be gravitating towards carbon fiber frames, and while carbon fiber frames are light and perform well (the high end frames do at least), more often than not, he sees that the lower end carbon fiber and aluminum frames having alignment problems.

The image of steel frames may be one of heaviness and slowness, but Koh believes that with the money saved on the affordability of a steel frame applied towards the right wheels, even a steel frame bicycle can outperform any low end carbon fiber bicycle (say, under $5000).  High quality steel frame bikes can achieve ultimate alignment and after a crash, they are easier to repair and re-align again.  Steel tubes are repairable and even replaceable, where other materials can be difficult (nearly impossible) to re-align again.

Each type of material has its own beauty, but steel framed bicycles, particularly lugged steel frame bicycles, have been around for 100+ years.  Steel is stable, it is beautiful, it is dependable.

Normally, people buy a new frame and then buy parts that will look good with their new frame.  Yes, you can do that with a steel frame bike.  But, there’s another way to feed your cycling enthusiasm:  pull out your favorite old classic parts, then polish them up and make them shine.   Then, order a custom steel frame that’ll fit your favorite parts and make your own original masterpiece.
